Entrepreneur Vs. Industrialist
I want to begin this with a story that you have probably never heard before. A man put some bananas on the top of a ladder, while allowing some monkeys gather around it. As you can guess, the monkey's began to climb the ladder in order to reach the bananas, but as soon as they did this, the man sprayed the monkey's with freezing cold water. If one of the monkey's attempted to climb the ladder again, the other monkey's would beat him up, because they did not want to get sprayed with freezing water again. The man removed one of the original monkey's from the batch, and inserted a new monkey to the group. When the new monkey went to climb the ladder in an attempt to reach the bananas, the other monkey's would beat him up. The man continued to introduce new monkey's into the group until none of the original monkey's were left. By this time, none of the new monkey's even attempted to reach for the banana's on top of the ladder, and none of them even knew why not to go for them. All of the new monkey's simply accepted that they were not supposed to go for the banana's and none of them actually knew why.
I began with this story because many times in society we often accept certain roles, terms, or beliefs simply because they were given to us and are the norm. But often to be great, we have to be willing to be a bit unusual, different, and willing to challenge the beliefs of others. Therefore I ask to you; do you want to be an entrepreneur or an industrialist?
Let's begin with what is an Entrepreneur in the first place, and why do we want to be one? The Miriam Webster's Dictionary defines an entrepreneur as: one who organizes, manages, and assumes the risks of a business or enterprise. Well, that didn't tell us too much there now did it? Who is one who organizes and manages a company? That could be anyone who holds a high level position within a company. Let's see if we can find a better definition. Dictionary.com defines an entrepreneur as: a person who organizes and manages ANY enterprise, especially a business, usually with considerable initiative and risk. The end of that one sounded more like a dare devil. What I am noticing is none of these definitions say anything about being a business owner, sole proprietor, or of a person even being the one to start a business. Interesting...
So what is an Industrialist??? Google defines an Industrialist as: A person involved in the ownership and management of industry. Let's take a second to understand what the management of industry is. Industry could be viewed as the car industry. So let's say an individual is a Big Shot in creating Cars. This individual would easily be defined as an Industrialist. Just look at people such as Elon Musk, Aliko Dangote, Abdulsamad Rabiu, Jeff Bezos, Richard Branson. Would you consider these individuals to simply Entrepreneur's??? NO!!! These individuals are considered to be Industrialists.
